Frederick Officer Wounded, Suspect Killed

A Frederick police officer fatally shot a suspected drug dealer last night after the man stabbed and wounded another officer in an undercover operation, police said.
The incident happened about 7 p.m. in the 1000 block of Columbine Drive.
Lt. Thomas Chase, criminal investigation commander of the Frederick police, said he passed on a tip that he received yesterday morning to the narcotics unit about drug sales in an apartment complex.
An undercover female officer purchased "a quantity of drugs" from the dealer near the apartment complex last night, Chase said. The officer then walked away and radioed for nearby officers to move in and make the arrest, Chase said.
The officers spread out in the complex looking for the dealer. An officer spotted him and tried to make the arrest, but the man pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the arm and back, Chase said.
Two other officers moved in and one fired his gun three times, Chase said. The suspect was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later. His name was not released, pending notification of relatives. The wounded officer was treated at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Md., and released.
Chase said the officer who fired his gun will be placed on administrative leave with pay while the department and the state's attorney investigate to determine whether the shooting was justified.
