Ritz Scores Overtime Winner for Maryland in Lacrosse

Xander Ritz scored the winning goal with 2 minutes 46 seconds left in sudden-death overtime as Maryland defeated Duke, 8-7, in men's lacrosse before 4,242 yesterday in Durham, N.C.
The Blue Devils (2-1, 0-1 ACC) took a 7-6 lead following a goal by junior Matt Danowski with 14:24 to play. The Terrapins (2-0, 1-0) forced overtime following a goal by senior Joe Walters with 10:33 left.
Ritz finished with a career-high five goals, one week after he scored four in a win over Georgetown. . . .
Junior Ian Dingman had four goals and seniors Steve Looney and Jon Birsner added three goals each as visiting Navy defeated North Carolina, 11-3. The Midshipmen (3-0) held the Tar Heels (2-2) scoreless for 34:11 spanning the second through fourth quarters. Senior goalkeeper Matt Russell had nine saves for Navy, which has won four straight in the series.
The Midshipmen have given up eight goals this season. . . .
Virginia outscored Syracuse 8-1 in the second quarter in a 20-15 victory before a capacity crowd in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers (5-0) have scored at least 20 goals in two consecutive games. . . .
Sophomore Brendan Cannon had four assists as Georgetown defeated St. John's, 9-5, at Multi-Sport Field. The Hoyas (1-1) scored eight goals in the first half.
· TENNIS: Rafael Nadal , playing only his second tournament in four months, beat top-ranked Roger Federer, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the final of the Dubai Open in the United Arab Emirates.
Federer had won this event the past three years. The Swiss star had captured the two other tournaments in which he had played -- the Australian Open and Doha Open. Nadal, 19, was seeded and ranked second. He ended Federer's 56-match hard-court winning streak.
"I think it is unbelievable to win against the best player in the world -- perhaps the best in history of the game," said Nadal, who broke down in tears on the court. . . .
Nadia Petrova beat Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo , 6-3, 7-5, to win the Qatar Open for the second WTA title of her career.
In defeating the world's No. 2 player, Petrova becomes the third Russian to win the Qatar title in six years.
"I am absolutely delighted with my effort," Petrova said. "I played my best match here in Doha today against probably the best player of the tournament."
· SOCCER: Chelsea beat West Bromwich Albion, 2-1, in the English Premier League despite having Arjen Robben sent off in the 62nd minute. Didier Drogba and Joe Cole scored for Chelsea. . . .
AC Milan scored three goals in the final 11 minutes to defeat Empoli, 3-0, and put pressure on Serie A leader Juventus.
Filippo Inzaghi scored twice and Andriy Shevchenko added another.
