The Washington Nationals yesterday named veteran play-by-play man Bob Carpenter and former all-star outfielder-first baseman Tom Paciorek as their television broadcast team, replacing Mel Proctor and Ron Darling .

Carpenter, 53, has 20 years experience calling baseball, the last 10 of which were with the St. Louis Cardinals, where his became a familiar voice during Mark McGwire 's home run chase of 1998.

Paciorek, 59, has 19 years experience as a color analyst, including the last five with the Atlanta Braves. He played 18 seasons in the majors with six organizations, and had perhaps his best seasons with the Seattle Mariners in the early 1980s.

Nationals President Tony Tavares , in a statement issued by the team, called Carpenter and Paciorek "highly knowledgeable and skilled broadcasters who have extensive National League broadcasting experience."

Carpenter and Paciorek will call 154 regular season games, the bulk of them on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN), as well as four exhibition games, the first of which will be March 18.

Proctor was the Nationals' television voice during their inaugural season, but was not asked to return. Darling left after the season to take the color analyst's job with the New York Mets.
