Blessed Is the Peacemaker

I was saddened to hear about the death of Christian Peacemaker Teams member Tom Fox [front page, March 12]. I regret this tragedy and the many others that have come out of the conflict in Iraq.

But as a fellow Quaker, I was disappointed as I read the article by Martin Weil and Michael Chandler, because it did not mention the work that Mr. Fox did in Iraq.

Mr. Fox worked in Iraq as a volunteer liaison for Iraqis who were trying to survive and improve their lives. He was so dedicated to the mission of peace that he risked his life in pursuit of it. He combated terrorism with love and an open ear.

Mr. Fox interacted with Iraqis in their homes, asking what they needed and how he could help.

I have met many people who have lived and worked throughout the Middle East and who have made great progress for peace. I recently received an e-mail from an American in Iraq that told about Sunnis and Shiites working together to repair and rebuild bombed mosques. The American wrote that Shiite neighbors gather to protect vulnerable mosques where Sunnis congregate and that in other shrines Sunni and Shiites pray together.

Where are the reporters when this happens?
