Dominion senior Meggie Meidlinger, who two years ago became the first female pitcher in Virginia to record a victory in a baseball game, pitched a perfect game yesterday as the host Titans blanked Briar Woods , 10-0. The game was shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.
With a fastball in the 70-mph range that she mixed with a curveball and change-up, Meidlinger (1-0) struck out five as Dominion improved to 4-1.
"I just went out and threw the ball over the plate and my defense didn't make any errors," said Meidlinger, a right-hander in her third season on the Titans varsity. "I was trying to hit whatever my catcher set up for me. Just trying to hit him in the glove."
Briar Woods (0-3), which opened in September, does not have a senior class and fields mostly freshmen and sophomores on the team.
"This was the best I've seen her pitch in three years," said Dominion Coach Jay Raines. "It was a phenomenal effort."
Titans third baseman Jordan Taylor went 3 for 3 with a double, a home run and four RBI and made a fine defensive play in the fourth inning, ranging to his left to reach a ground ball in the hole and preserve the perfect game.
Breidenstine Delivers
Mount Hebron senior David Breidenstine's eighth-inning single scored Alex Iwaskiw with the game's lone run as the defending Howard County champion Vikings beat Catonsville , 1-0, in a nonleague baseball game in Ellicott City.
In the season opener for both teams, Mount Hebron senior right-hander Jeff Walker outdueled University of Virginia-bound lefty Neil Davis of Catonsville. Walker worked seven innings, allowing only three hits and striking out five. Senior Andrew Choi worked a perfect eighth and earned the win in relief. . . . North County right-hander Heather Karasek struck out 13 Dulaney hitters and walked only one to lead the visiting Knights to a 2-1 softball victory in eight innings. Karasek, a junior, also hit a home run and an RBI triple. . . .
Senior midfielder Brian Jackson scored four goals, including the game-winner 42 seconds into overtime, as Bullis beat Sidwell Friends , 7-6, in a nonleague boys' lacrosse game in Northwest.
