Six Arlington Science Focus School third- and fourth-graders were recognized in the "I Have A Dream Too" essay contest, which was sponsored at the school by the Equal Rights Center in Washington, D.C.
Among third-graders, Harry Smith placed first, Emma Tayloe was second and Zachary Lightfoot was third. In the fourth-grade competition, Nathan Fajtar placed first, Elaine Sheehan was second and Courtney LaPenta was third.
Senior Kevin Kines of Wakefield High School was named the winner of Arlington's 2006 Neighborhood Day Poster contest. Finalists included senior Tim Kouril of Yorktown High School, junior Eric Sedwick of Washington-Lee High School, junior Candida Prada of Wakefield High School and senior Liam Ward of Washington-Lee High School.
Two staff members of the Animal Welfare League of Arlington were honored by the Animal Services Committee of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments for their work in aiding pets and pet owners in the Gulf Coast states after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Rebecca Gall received the 2005 Adoption Team Award, and Jennifer Newman received the Humane Education Team of 2005 Award.
Arlington County and the Commission on the Status of Women honored Marjorie Hobart , Mary H. Hynes , Virginia Schneider and Dama Vasquez during the 2006 Person of Vision Awards on March 15 for outstanding contributions to improving the lives of women and girls in Arlington.
