First Team

F LAURA BROOMFIELD, ST. MARY'S RYKEN, SOPH.

Broomfield moved to the area from Georgia last summer and immediately showed why she has received campus visits by coaching staffs from Duke and Maryland. She averaged 22 points, which led the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, and 10 rebounds before suffering a knee injury late in the season.

F BRITTANY ELEY, WESTLAKE, JR.

The most versatile player in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference showed why she is probably headed for a Division I program by averaging a career high of 15.7 points -- her third straight season in double figures. A repeat All-Extra, Eley can score facing up and driving the lane as easily as she can posting up, and is strong enough to defend all areas of the court.

G BRIANA GLOVER, THOMAS STONE, JR.

Glover confidently stepped into the lead role in Thomas Stone's offense and averaged 15.5 points per game. She played her best down the stretch as the Cougars homed in on their first SMAC championship. She had a career high of 25 points Feb. 8 against Calvert and scored 24 points nine days later against Westlake.

F AARIES REED, WESTLAKE, SR.

Westlake's emotional linchpin for the past three years, Reed has ended each of her four varsity seasons with at least 20 victories. A tenacious low-post defender and strong rebounder, Reed often guarded players taller than she is and still kept them at bay. She signed with Morgan State.

F ASHLEY THOMPSON, McDONOUGH, SR.

Thompson overcame an ankle injury from last season and showed she is ready to play at Delaware State next winter. She averaged just under 19 points per game, led the Rams to the Maryland 2A South final and repeated as an All-Extra. Thompson transferred from Lackey after her freshman season, when McDonough won only four games. The Rams won 13, 17 and 18 during her three seasons.

Girls' Player of the Year

C WHITNEY JOHNSON, CALVERT, SR.

A repeat player of the year, she finished fourth in the Washington area with 24.5 points per game. She added a drop-step move this season that made her virtually unstoppable, even against frequent double and occasional triple teams. She signed to play volleyball for Albany.

Girls' Coach of the Year

MARK GLADFELTER, THOMAS STONE

With only two seniors in his rotation, Gladfelter led the Cougars to their first SMAC championship, as they won their final 13 regular-season games. In his five seasons, Thomas Stone's victory total has gone from 4 to 8 to 14 in consecutive years to this year's 18.
