With shaving cream on his cheeks and in his eyes and hair, Ovechkin, after talking to a throng of media members, posed for a photographer at his locker room stall while holding the puck he had blasted past Thomas.

Ovechkin could celebrate goal No. 50 when the Capitals play in Atlanta on Thursday.

During regulation, it appeared Ovechkin's season-long goal drought might reach seven games.

He had been frustrated by Thomas on two very good scoring chances, including a mini-breakaway in the third period and a point-blank chance in the first period.

"He's been pressing a bit because he's been trying to get to 50 and 100 points," Halpern said. "He had a ton of chances tonight and in the past few games. It was nice to see him score, especially the way he scored."

Zubrus picked off a pass and snapped a shot over Thomas's glove at 15:46 of the second period to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead. The goal was unassisted.

Bruins rookie Mark Stuart scored his first NHL goal at 10:21 of the third to tie the game. The defenseman fired a one-timer past Olie Kolzig (37 saves) from the high slot.

Capitals Notes: Right wing Matt Bradley left the game in the second period with a lower body injury and did not return. He blocked a shot at 5:16 and limped to the bench. Left wing Ben Clymer returned to the lineup after three games with a lower body injury. Meantime, center Brian Sutherby missed his second straight game with an upper body injury. Clymer's return forced forward Kris Beech out of the lineup.
