Free agent linebacker Keith Adams signed a two-year deal with the Carolina Panthers yesterday, ending the possibility of him joining the Redskins as a replacement for LaVar Arrington , his agent said.

For the past month Adams's agent, Jordan Woy , and the Redskins had been negotiating, and appeared to be making progress when Adams visited Redskins Park last week. But when Adams left the complex without a contract, it became clear that a deal between he and the Redskins might not be finalized.

Adams began his career in Dallas but played the last four years in Philadelphia, totaling a career-high 59 tackles last season. Coach Joe Gibbs has been clear during the free agent period that he needed to upgrade the weak-side linebacker position, but according to numerous sources it was equally clear that the Redskins did not intend on spending big money to do it. According to sources, a primary obstacle has been the Redskins' unwillingness to offer players much in the way of a higher base salary and especially signing bonuses, the only real measure of guaranteed money in an NFL contract.

The Redskins still have approximately $3.8 million left to spend and could still be in the market for a free agent, but sources say the team may be more inclined to re-sign Warrick Holdman , who replaced Arrington as a starter during much of the first part of the season.
