Notable DVDs now available include:
· Hostel (Unrated) The hit gorefest debuts on DVD in an unrated widescreen edition. Extras include four commentary tracks: from director Eli Roth; from Roth and executive producers Quentin Tarantino, Boaz Yakin and Scott Spiegel; from producer Chris Briggs (yes, another one -- eight people get a producing credit of some sort on this picture) and documentarian Gabriel Roth; and from Ain't It Cool News's Harry Knowles. There are also a couple of featurettes.
· Mrs. Henderson Presents (R) Directed by Stephen Frears, this comedy features some true pros -- Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins, Christopher Guest -- in the story of a theater that's on the verge of going out of business until the owner (Dench) hits upon the idea of nudity to pack in the crowds. Dench received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role, and the picture was nominated for Best Costume Design.
· Breakfast on Pluto (R) Neil Jordan's film stars Cillian Murphy in the lead role (Murphy received a Golden Globe nomination) of cross-dressing Patrick "Kitten" Braden, who has been raised in a small Irish town by a priest (Liam Neeson). Obsessed with finding his birth mother, Patrick travels to London, where he is befriended by a romantic magician (Stephen Rea) and ends up involved with the Irish Republican Army. Extras include commentary with Jordan and Murphy and a behind-the-scenes featurette.
· One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer of George McGovern (Unrated) This film retraces George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign. It's narrated by Amy Goodman and includes interviews with, among others, Gore Vidal, Gary Hart, Gloria Steinem, Warren Beatty, Dick Gregory and McGovern himself. It's fiercely critical of the state of the political process today.
· A Bigger Splash (Unrated) Director and cinematographer Jack Hazan followed artist David Hockney for three years in the early '70s. The result mixes documentary with fiction and centers on Hockney's real-life breakup with his lover of five years, Peter Schlesinger. The film originally received only limited release because of an explicit homosexual love scene (it was even temporarily banned in France). Hazan went on to make "Rude Boy" (featuring the Clash) and "Comic Act."
· Coachella (R) The Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival annually brings together some of the biggest names in music along with buzzed-about up-and-comers. This concert DVD features performances by the Arcade Fire, Belle & Sebastian, Björk, Bright Eyes, the Chemical Brothers, the Crystal Method, Fischerspooner, the Flaming Lips, Iggy & the Stooges, Kool Keith, the Mars Volta, Morrissey, Nu-Mark & Cut Chemist, Oasis, Pixies, the Polyphonic Spree, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Roni Size, Saul Williams, Spearhead, Squarepusher, the White Stripes and Zero 7. There are also interviews with the likes of Belle & Sebastian, Ben Harper, Mos Def, Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis, Tenacious D and Thievery Corp.
· Herbie Hancock: Possibilities (Unrated) This film focuses on Hancock putting together his "Possibilities" album in 2005 and shows him working with Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, Sting and others. It also looks at Hancock's history with such material as footage of the Miles Davis quintet. Hancock has always been a musical innovator, so the opportunity to glimpse his creative process is quite interesting.
