MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS
Federal Services Acquisition Corp. agreed to buy Advanced Technology Systems Inc. of McLean, a privately owned designer of electronic business systems for government and commercial clients, for $85 million. Stifel Nicolaus & Co . acted as adviser to ATS. Federal Services Acquisition is a New York-based, publicly traded special-purpose acquisition company, otherwise known as a blank-check firm.
NeuStar Inc. , a Sterling provider of services to the telecommunications and Internet industries, agreed to buy UltraDNS Corp. , a Reston provider of managed domain-name systems services, for $61.8 million.
E-Security Inc. , a Vienna information security firm, sold to Novell Inc . Terms were not disclosed. E-Security had been backed by venture capital firms Fidelity Ventures of Boston and Updata Venture Partners of New Jersey.
SV Investment Partners , a New York private equity fund, bought Pennysaver Group Inc. , a Hanover-based publisher of direct-mail shoppers in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. Terms were not disclosed.
PRIVATE EQUITY
Columbia Capital , an Alexandria venture capital firm focusing on telecommunications, software and media, received total commitments of $560 million for its fifth venture fund, according to SEC documents.
SunRocket Inc. , a Vienna Internet phone service company, raised $12 million in a Series B-1 preferred stock sale. Investors include Nokia Ventures , Doll Capital Management and Mayfield Fund , all of Menlo Park, Calif., and Anthem Capital of Baltimore. According to an SEC filing, SunRocket will use the money for general corporate purposes. It was the first round of funding since Lisa Hook , a former AOL Broadband president, was hired as chief executive in March. In all, SunRocket has raised more than $45 million in venture capital in the last two years.
Core Capital Partners , a District-based venture fund, agreed to sell Dulles-based portfolio company Core Communications Corp . to Swisscom AG. Terms were not disclosed. Core Communications provides information technology services to the hospitality industry.
