MLS Fines Eskandarian $250 For Red Bull Goal Celebration

Wednesday, April 26, 2006

Alecko Eskandarian 's goal celebration Saturday at Giants Stadium has left a bitter aftertaste.

Eskandarian, the D.C. United striker who scored twice during a 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls, was fined $250 by MLS yesterday for his antics following his first goal.

After breaking a scoreless tie just before halftime, the former University of Virginia star ran toward the United bench and caught a can of Red Bull, an energy drink that had been tossed to him by teammate Jamil Walker .

Eskandarian popped the top, took a swig and then spit out the contents. In announcing the fine, MLS referred to Eskandarian's "inappropriate conduct."

Red Bull was invented by an Austrian company that recently purchased the operating rights to the New York franchise and changed the club's name from MetroStars to Red Bulls.

"I'm a little disappointed because it was meant to be humorous, but I understand some people might have thought it was disrespectful," he said in a telephone interview. "I just can't believe how much attention it has gotten."

Asked what his father, Andranik , a former New York Cosmos defender who attended Saturday's match, thought of the celebration, Alecko said, "He definitely thought it was funny but then he said, 'Alecko, you're an idiot!' "
