Besides Weehawken and Jersey City, there are other locales not far off the Jersey Turnpike where you can save some money on hotel rates -- and still be within a half-hour or so of Times Square. Call the hotels before arrival for specifics on getting into the city. Options include:

· Secaucus, N.J. Near the Meadowlands sports complex and five miles from Times Square, Secaucus has numerous hotels, most of them national chains. Properties include an Amerisuites, Courtyard by Marriott, Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn and Crowne Plaza. Many hotels offer free shuttle service to the Secaucus Junction station, where you can hop on a NJ Transit train into the city ($3 one way). NJ Transit buses also provide service into the Port Authority; one-way fare starts at about $2.30. Info: 877-652-8287, http://www.meadowlandslibertycvb.org/ , http://www.stayinthemeadowlands.com/ .

· Newark. Stay either in the city or near the airport in a variety of chains, including a Days Inn, Ramada, Holiday Inn and Comfort Suites. Transport into the city includes PATH trains ($1.50 each way), buses (from about $4 one way) and NJ Transit trains (from $3.75 one way). A monorail from Newark Airport (take a hotel shuttle to get to it) delivers you to a NJ Transit train ($14 one way from the airport station). Info: http://www.ci.newark.nj.us./

· Fort Lee, N.J. A Holiday Inn, Best Western and Hilton are among the offerings in Fort Lee, at the foot of the George Washington Bridge. The Hilton offers shuttle service ($10) into the city, while NJ Transit bus service is available near other hotels (about $3 one way to Port Authority). Info: 877-652-8287, http://www.meadowlandslibertycvb.org/ , http://www.stayonthewaterfront.com/ .

· Staten Island, N.Y. Only a few lodging options (including several bed-and-breakfasts, the Hilton Garden Inn and the Staten Island Hotel) here, but it's a decent base if you've always wanted to try out the free 24/7 ferry to Lower Manhattan. The Hilton has a free shuttle to the ferry, and you can take a $2 bus from the Staten Island Hotel. Drive and park at the ferry terminal for rates starting at $5.50 a day.
