Kuznetsova Bounces V. Williams

Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Venus Williams yesterday, 6-4, 6-2, and top-seeded Kim Clijsters downed Francesca Schiavone , 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals of the J&S Cup in Warsaw.

Kuznetsova will next play Anna Chakvetadze of Russia, who beat Ana Ivanovic of Serbia and Montenegro, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Clijsters will play Elena Dementieva of Russia, who dropped the first set against Polish teenager Agnieszka Radwanska before cruising to a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 win.

Williams, who overcame leg cramps to beat Martina Hingis in three sets on Thursday, said her legs weren't an issue against Kuznetsova.

"I felt fine to be honest," Williams said. "I felt like I could get to the balls, but also I think that on clay you have to have the mind-set of really working your feet and getting to the balls. "

· COURTS: Two San Francisco Chronicle reporters who wrote a book about Barry Bonds 's alleged steroid use were subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury regarding court documents they used in their articles, the newspaper reported.

The subpoenas of the authors of "Game of Shadows," Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams , called for them to turn over their copies of grand jury transcripts from the 2003 investigation of a steroid distribution ring based at the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative, or BALCO, according to the Chronicle. They also were asked to provide the identity of the person or persons who leaked the secret documents to them.

Eve Burton , vice president and general counsel for Hearst Corp., which owns the newspaper, said, "The Chronicle and its reporters intend to fight the subpoenas vigorously." . . .

Golfer Joe Ogilvie was charged with driving while impaired after a traffic stop before this week's Wachovia Championship in Charlotte.

Police spokesman Keith Bridges said Ogilvie was stopped for speeding early Wednesday morning, and the officer smelled alcohol. Ogilvie failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody before posting bond. . . .

Oklahoma State men's basketball coach Eddie Sutton pleaded no contest to drunken driving charges stemming from a Feb. 10 accident in which his sport-utility vehicle collided with another vehicle and then hit a tree.

· PRO FOOTBALL: Cornerback Nate Clements re-signed with the Buffalo Bills, accepting a one-year, $7.2 million contract. . . .

Running back Tony Hollings signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Bears.

· PRO BASKETBALL: The Denver Nuggets will not extend the contract of General Manager Kiki Vandeweghe . The announcement comes five days after Denver was eliminated from the playoffs in the first round for the third straight year.
