In his first game on the East Coast this season, Giants OF Barry Bonds was greeted with the familiar boos that have followed him everywhere.
"You stink, loser," a fan yelled as Bonds walked to the plate in the first inning of last night's game in Philadelphia.
The boos grew louder when Bonds stepped into the batter's box, but they quickly turned to cheers when he flied out on the first pitch.
With Bonds in left field, fans in the bleachers behind him chanted "Just retire" and "Just inject me." A long banner in left field read, "Ruth did it on hot dogs & beer." Many carried signs that had simple asterisks on them.
Bonds got loud boos when the lineups were introduced, though there was a smattering of cheers. He went 0 for 3.
· TOP TANDEM FOR REDS: Cincinnati RHPs Aaron Harang , who leads the league with 45 strikeouts, and Bronson Arroyo are a combined 10-1, helping the Reds get off to a 20-9 start.
"That gives us two pretty good pitchers that we have a chance to match up against anybody with," Manager Jerry Narron said.
· PENNY'S HORSE WINS: Dodgers RHP Brad Penny stopped by Hollywood Park yesterday on his way to Dodger Stadium and wound up in the winner's circle.
Penny, a part-owner of Excess Temptations , watched the 4-year-old California-bred son of In Excess win the fourth race by 3 1/4 lengths.
"He looked good," Penny said. "I don't get nervous when I'm pitching, but this, I can hardly stand. It drives me nuts."
