Ryan has not ruled on the renewed request to move the trial.

At times, the exchanges between the judge and the candidates who were eventually selected to serve resembled civics lessons, with Ryan lecturing on the presumption of innocence, the burden on the prosecution and the importance of the standard of reasonable doubt.

Muhammad asked the judge to strike one of the jurors because she seemed "too eager" to serve and at least three others who he said had expressed the belief that he was guilty.

"Your honor, I object," Muhammad said to Ryan in one typical exchange. "I strike him."

"Okay, what's the reason?" Ryan asked.

"Your honor, because first of all he's got a problem with me representing myself, okay, he got a preconceived notion."

"What he said was the same thing a lot of people say: A person who represents himself has a fool for a client. And you've probably heard that."

"They're quoting Lincoln, that's what they're quoting."

"Did he say that?"

"Yeah. Yes, your honor -- I'm sorry -- and he has a preconceived notion about me already being guilty."

"I don't believe that," Ryan responded. "When I questioned him and asked him about it, he said he would be impartial, open-minded, that he could listen to the evidence and not make a decision until he's heard all the evidence. I believe him."

The trial resumes tomorrow.
