Charlie Manuel gestured and gyrated. He cussed and fussed. His message got across.
The Phillies haven't lost since their normally low-key manager ripped into them in the early innings of a game at Florida last Monday.
While Barry Bonds 's 713th career home run Sunday night received its deserved attention, the mammoth shot overshadowed Philadelphia's three-game sweep of the Giants that gave the Phillies eight straight wins for the first time since a 13-game run in 1991.
The Phillies now turn their focus on the NL East-leading Mets.
New York begins a three-game series in Philadelphia tonight, with Pedro Martinez going against Brett Myers .
"We have to keep playing winning baseball no matter what," SS Jimmy Rollins said. "That's what we've been doing since Charlie got on us pretty well, and it was good he did get on us. It picked our spirits up."
· FASSERO DEMOTED: Giants LHP Jeff Fassero might have thrown his final pitch in a major league career spanning 15 seasons.
Fassero was designated for assignment to make room for Noah Lowry , who was activated from the disabled list in time to start last night's makeup game against the Astros.
Fassero had a slow start to the season, going 1-1 with a 7.80 ERA in 10 appearances and one start.
The Giants also recalled OF Dan Ortmeier from Class AAA Fresno and transferred C Justin Knoedler 's option to Fresno after he had been sent to Class AA Connecticut late Sunday.
· PONSON AILING: Cardinals RHP Sidney Ponson will miss his next start after he strained a muscle in his right elbow during Sunday's game against the Marlins.
St. Louis also optioned OF John Gall to Class AAA Memphis and activated OF Larry Bigbie from the 15-day DL.
