SmartBrief plans to hire about 15 people in the next three months. Rick Stamberger, chief executive, talked with The Post's Andrea Caumont.
What does your company do?
Our company produces daily e-mail services that provide essential content to professional audiences. Our partners are trade associations and nonprofits. We produce aggregated news for everyone from senior executives in the biotechnology industry, to professionals in the cable television industry, to teacher leaders in the education sector. We do it where there's both news and advertising together, so there are audiences where it wouldn't be appropriate, but for growth industries where you have decision makers who are buying things, this is a great service.
What do you think your employees would say are the best reasons for working at your company?
I think we have a great work environment. It's a strong but laid back culture with very positive energy, driven by a group of smart, talented individuals -- our employees.
Who owns your company?
The three founders, and I'm one of them, own a majority of the company. The next largest shareholder is the employee group, and we have a small group of Washington-based investors.
What sense of stability can your company offer job candidates?
I think the fact that the employees who are here stay is one sign of stability. We've had great employee retention over the past 6 1/2 years. We've had two or three people in recent months say they want to make their career here. We've been profitable for five years. We have double-digit, year-on-year growth and have for the past six years. We have great partnerships with some of the leading trade associations in the country.
What are the demographics of your company?
Company-wide we're 45 percent female and 10 percent minority. On the five-person senior management team, there are two women and one minority.
What positions do you have available and what level of expertise do you want?
We're looking for four to five junior editors to create daily online business and consumer news e-mail publications. We're looking for people who have a love and talent for writing, everybody from new graduates to someone who's five, eight, or 10 years out. We're also looking for three sales representatives with two to four years of experience. We've found that people who have done complex sales or online sales do well with us. We also need two entry-level sales associates to support our sales team. We'd also like to hire one senior executive who will market our service to leading associations and nonprofits as well as a partnership marketing manager who will handle our outbound marketing of the service and respond to our inbound requests. We also need a client services manager who would work directly with the association after the sale, as well as a product manager. As we continue to innovate we need people to manage new products and services we're developing.
