Wade-In Festival Is For Bay Awareness

Sunday, May 28, 2006; E03

WADE-IN : The Eighth Annual Wade-In Festival at the Chesapeake Environmental Center in Grasonville, Md., is scheduled for Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be kayaking, canoeing, hiking and bird-watching. Around midday everyone will roll up their pants and wade into the Bay until their feet disappear underwater -- a move, organizers say, to highlight the murkiness of the water and to raise awareness of the environmental problems facing the Bay.

The environmental center is a 510-acre peninsula just over the Bay Bridge that features hiking trails and a canoe route. For more information call 410-827-6694.

TOUR DE ARLINGTON: Lance Armstrong, America's most popular cyclist, may have retired from professional cycling, but his imprint on the sport is here to stay. The seven-time Tour de France winner won't be participating in the CSC Invitational in Arlington, but cycling's mainstream appeal will be on display in Saturday's race, which in its ninth year has become one of the premier cycling events in the area. Some of the country's best will be competing for the $10,000 prize. Amateur races start at 8 a.m. The professionals kick off at noon for 100 laps around a 1-kilometer loop near the Clarendon Metro station. For more information, visit http://www.arlingtonsports.org .

CANOE THROUGH: The Great Rappahannock Whitewater Canoe Race is set for Saturday and Sunday in Fredericksburg. Entry fees -- $12 per paddler for the first race, $7 for each additional race -- benefit Fredericksburg Rescue Squad and The Friends of the Rappahannock.

CHECK OUT THE VIEW : The Maryland Chapter of the Sierra Club is sponsoring a seven-mile hike through a scenic stretch of the Appalachian Trail tomorrow. The hike begins with a 500-foot climb to Weverton Cliffs and provides an excellent view of the Potomac River. Hikers will gather at 10 a.m. at the Weverton AT parking area in Weverton (near Harpers Ferry).
