SINGAPORE, May 28 -- An earthquake measuring 6.7 in magnitude rocked the South Pacific island nation of Tonga on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
Another quake, 6.2 in magnitude, shook the New Britain region of Papua New Guinea, the USGS reported. As of early this morning, it was unclear whether the tremors caused casualties or damage.
The Tonga quake hit at 4:36 p.m. local time about 90 miles northeast of the capital Nuku'alofa.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said the quake near Papua New Guinea's New Britain island hit at about 1:25 p.m. local time.
"No destructive Pacific-wide tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data," the centre said on its Web Site.
Sunday's quakes followed a quake of similar magnitude that hit Indonesia's main island of Java Saturday, killing more than 3,700 people.
