Staff writer Michael D. Shear spent a day on the trail with Senate candidate Harris Miller. A story about campaigning with James Webb, the other Democratic candidate, will follow.

Primary: Voters will pick the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in a June 13 primary. The primary is unlikely to draw many voters, and the outcome is unpredictable. The winner will oppose Sen. George Allen in the Nov. 7 general election.

Miller: 54, McLean resident, former technology industry lobbyist, longtime Democratic activist; entered the race Jan. 9.

Webb: 60, Arlington resident, former Marine, Navy secretary during the Reagan administration, author; entered the race Feb. 7.

Voting: Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Virginia does not register voters by party, so the primary is open to any registered voter. Virginia requires voters to show identification at the polls or sign an affirmation of identity.

Voters Guide: The Washington Post will publish a Voters Guide in the Virginia Extras on June 8.
