Redskins quarterback Mark Brunell will miss the next few weeks because of a broken bone in the index finger of his throwing hand, the team announced.
The injury occurred during practice Wednesday, and Brunell did not work out for the remainder of the week. The team characterized the injury as a "very minor hairline fracture" that did not require surgery. Brunell, however, will wear a splint and could miss the Redskins' June 16-18 minicamp. Training camp begins during the final week of July.
Brunell, who will be 36 on Sept. 17, is in Virginia Beach for a Redskins fan function. He threw for 3,050 yards and 23 touchdowns last season and led the Redskins to their first playoff appearance since 1999.
The Redskins issued a two-sentence release attributed to Coach Joe Gibbs that stated: "Mark Brunell suffered an injury to his left index finger in a drill during practice this week and has a small fracture. He will be out 2-3 weeks and is expected to be ready for training camp."
