BALTIMORE, June 4 -- It had been his glove that brought slick-fielding utility infielder Brandon Fahey into the major leagues this season. It was his bat that forced him into the Baltimore Orioles' lineup on Sunday to play left field.

"Utility guys need to play everywhere," Fahey said. "I was kind of expecting it at some point in my career."

Fahey rewarded the Orioles with some offensive punch -- a single in the second inning, a solo home run in the third and another single in the seventh. Manager Sam Perlozzo said he just wanted to get Fahey some playing time, something that has not been frequent since second baseman Brian Roberts's return from the disabled list on May 24. Now it appears Fahey may stay in the lineup.

"He's going to get in the mix, I would think," Perlozzo said. "I don't know how his defense is going to respond. But it sure adds something to the ballclub."

Penn to Be Examined

Perlozzo said pitcher Hayden Penn, on the disabled list after having an appendectomy, was scheduled to return to Baltimore on Monday to be examined by team doctors. If they clear him, Penn, who was scheduled to make his season debut with the Orioles on May 23 but instead was sent to the hospital, will travel to Sarasota, Fla., to begin his rehabilitation. . . .

The series attendance for the three games against the New York Yankees was 143,898, ranking 10th in Oriole Park at Camden Yards history. . . .

Perlozzo said that no decision has been made on rookie Adam Loewen's immediate future with the team. Loewen allowed three earned runs in five innings in his first major league start on Saturday against the Yankees.

"I'm sure if he doesn't stay here, we'll see him in the rotation later in the season," Perlozzo said.
