During the six years of construction on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project, traffic has been stopped, detoured and rerouted several times with varying results. Here is a look at some of the major switches and their effects.

July 2005 Bridge officials warn of a regionwide traffic meltdown as the outer loop of the Capital Beltway is reduced to one lane so it can be realigned. Drivers stay away from the bridge, and traffic is lighter than on a normal weekend day.

August 2005 The inner loop is reduced to one lane for a similar Beltway realignment. This time people come and regret it. Jams stretch as long as six miles.

September 2005 Two exit ramps from the northbound lanes of Route 210 to the inner loop are converted into one. Drivers have difficulty adjusting, and traffic backs up for about a mile for days before they get used to the new configuration.

Last Weekend The Beltway is closed and detours are established so steel beams that are part of a new Route 210 interchange can be lifted over the highway. The contractor has difficulty hanging one of the beams, and the work runs late, causing the Beltway to be closed for the first 90 minutes of rush hour. Drivers suffer through a seven-mile backup.
