Athlete of the Year
Corryl Boyd, Westlake, Jr.
Boyd came back from an injury-plagued winter to reclaim his spot among the D.C. area's elite jumpers and sprinters. A Spring All-Met, Boyd won the state 400 championship, took second in the 200 and third in the triple jump and 200. He was 3A South Region champion in the 400, long jump and triple jump and first in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference in the 200, triple jump and long jump.
Boys' and Girls' Coach of the Year
Beth Shook, Westlake
Shook guided a deep boys' team that came up big when it mattered most, winning the SMAC, 3A South Region and Maryland 3A championships. The girls had less depth, but they got a lot out of what they had. Their one state qualifier, sophomore Danielle Brock, won three events, scored 38 points and earned the team a second-place finish.
First Team
Tristan Benton, North Point, Fr.
One of the new school's top young standouts, Benton was SMAC and 1A South Region champion in the high jump and finished fourth in the state in the long jump.
Turner Coggins, La Plata, Jr.
The SMAC discus champion and shot put runner-up shined at the state meet, where he won the shot put and finished sixth in the discus. He was also the 3A South Region champ in the discus.
Santiato Ennis, Great Mills, Sr.
Ennis set a SMAC record in winning the 400 in 48.3 seconds and was third in the 100. He will compete for Louisville next year.
