Tejada Gets A Free Pass From Twins

MINNEAPOLIS, June 11 -- Three times this weekend, Baltimore Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada came up to bat in crucial situations and all three times the Minnesota Twins intentionally walked him. All three times the strategy worked.
Twice on Friday and once on Saturday catcher Ramon Hernandez, who hits behind Tejada, could not drive in a run, striking out twice and grounding out once.
Entering the weekend Tejada had been intentionally walked just twice.
"It doesn't surprise me," Orioles Manager Sam Perlozzo said. "Miggy is one of the better hitters in the league. I don't think it's a knock on Ramon by any stretch."
Though Tejada is one of the more feared hitters in baseball, he was only intentionally walked nine times last year.
Halama on Way Out
It appears the Orioles are leaning toward parting ways with reliever John Halama on Monday when the team is expected to activate outfielder Jay Gibbons. Perlozzo said that because of Gibbons's balky knee he would prefer to carry another bench player in case he needs a pinch runner or defensive replacement late in games. On Saturday, Perlozzo said the team hasn't considered releasing reliever Bruce Chen, which would leave Halama as the most likely candidate to be dropped. Halama, who has a 6.14 ERA, has allowed runs in his past six outings. . . .
Orioles closer Chris Ray, who allowed two runs in Saturday's 9-7 win against Minnesota, now has a 5.40 ERA in non-save situations. Ray is 15 for 15 in save situations with a 1.65 ERA. . . .
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Daniel Cabrera's 50 walks are the most over a pitcher's first 10 starts of a season since Tim Wakefield had 51 in 1993. No pitcher has had that many walks in so few innings over his first 10 starts since Bobby Witt had 53 walks in 50 innings in 1986.
