Alana Beard and Chasity Melvin scored 20 points apiece, but it wasn't enough as the Washington Mystics saw their season-high three-game winning streak come to an end with a 72-66 loss to the New York Liberty last night at Madison Square Garden.

Becky Hammon scored 23 points and Shameka Christon added 21 for New York, while Barbara Farris had 11 points and nine rebounds and Loree Moore added a career-high nine rebounds and six assists to help the Liberty (3-9) snap a three-game losing streak.

Melvin also had eight rebounds for Washington (7-4), but missed 5 of 11 free throws, including the potential tying attempt with 1 minute 35 seconds left after she was fouled while making a layup. The Liberty then scored the final five points to close the game.

"They were very efficient tonight in every aspect of the game and there was nothing we could do to stop them," Beard said. "We beat them by 35 in the first game. They're totally a different team."

Crystal Robinson, playing at Madison Square Garden as a visiting player for the first time, had five points on 2-for-12 shooting. Robinson averaged 10.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in seven seasons with the Liberty before signing with Washington in the offseason.

Washington was without DeLisha Milton Jones, who has a sprained ligament in her left knee and will miss six to eight weeks.

? FEVER 77, SKY 55: Tamika Whitmore scored 17 points to help host Indiana chalk up its largest margin of victory this season.

? MERCURY 87, STORM 80: Diana Taurasi scored 18 of her 26 points in the second half to help Phoenix secure its first road win of the season.
