Adrian M. Fenty hustled down the 3000 block of Channing Street NE one recent evening, scanning porches to make sure his campaign team knocked on every door. He studied a neighborhood map highlighted in pink and green to track where he needed to go. Looking up, he spotted a campaign aide who had stopped a few feet short of the full Fenty principle: Voters reward candidates who meet them at the doorstep.

"Knock on the inside door!" he yelled.

Then came the shout from another aide: "Council member!"

Fenty sprinted across the street, waved and began his pitch:

Nice to see you, sir. You may be aware I'm a current member of the D.C. city council -- been there for a couple of terms. I've got a good reputation for staying out in the community, being responsive, holding people accountable for a change. That's exactly what we need in the mayor's office.

Pause.

Do you think we will be able to count on your support?

The answer was yes.

A lot of our supporters have been really helpful about putting our campaign signs in the yard. It's a small green sign that says "Fenty for Mayor." Would that be okay ?

An affirming nod.

Fenty said thanks, springing off the porch as one campaign worker swooped in with a petition to place Fenty on the ballot and another headed to a car to grab a yard sign.

Time elapsed: 57 seconds.
