Cappie Pondexter doesn't have any rookie jitters about getting the ball in key situations.

Pondexter hit a three-pointer with 5.8 seconds left and then stole the inbounds pass to lift the Mercury to an 81-78 victory over the Minnesota Lynx last night in Phoenix.

"I like to take the big shots," Pondexter said. "I don't mind. I love it when the game is close like that."

The Mercury overcame the poor shooting of its top two scorers -- Diana Taurasi (4 for 16) and Pondexter (5 for 14) -- to win for the sixth time in nine games.

? STORM 75, SPARKS 67: In Los Angeles, Betty Lennox scored 27 points and Seattle snapped the Sparks' eight-game winning streak.

Sue Bird added 11 points for Seattle (9-8), which played without Lauren Jackson. The all-star forward, who has played through a stress fracture in her left shin since she was a teenager, missed her first game since September 2004.

The Storm used a 9-0 run over the first two-plus minutes of the second quarter to open a 28-15 lead. They stayed ahead the rest of the game.
