Signatures to Spare for Cropp, Fenty

Ten candidates, including a Republican, turned in petitions for the Ward 3 race. Fourteen candidates, including two from the Statehood Green Party, filed in Ward 5.

In the Ward 6 council race, school board member Tommy Wells, Curtis Etherly and Leo Pinson turned in petitions for the Democratic nomination. Republican Tony Williams also filed.

But Ward 6 Democratic hopeful Will Cobb forgot about yesterday's deadline.

"Holy cow, I got them sitting in my house right now," he told a reporter after getting a call.

Cobb's campaign manager, Jessica Strieter, raced down to the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics but arrived at 5:45 p.m., 45 minutes after the deadline.

Cobb said he had collected 560 signatures during an aggressive door-to-door campaign to replace retiring incumbent Sharon Ambrose.

At 4:59 p.m., Registrar Kathy Fairley dialed a phone number for the official time and placed the call on a speakerphone so that filers could listen to the last minute tick away. When the voice on the phone said 5 p.m., Fairley closed the office door.

The election board will examine the petitions. Members of the public can begin to challenge signatures on Saturday.
