Turning The Tables On 'Table Tennis'

Rockstar trades in its guns and rocket launchers for Ping Pong paddles with its latest title, "Table Tennis." Yes, the folks responsible for the "Grand Theft Auto" series are showing players a lighter side with this highly addictive game for the Xbox 360. You're probably thinking, "Table tennis?" We did, but after playing it we can't seem to put it down. Bottom line: "Table Tennis" rocks.

What makes the game so great is how intuitive and precise the controls are. Much like a tennis game, it gives players a plethora of moves, including a wide range of strokes, spins and power shots. Players are given the option to use the face buttons or the analog stick for their shots. With the addition of the triggers, players can add spin, more power and finesse on the ball. Although the game's control scheme is simplistic, mastering it is where the true challenge lies. At first the game may seem slow and easy, but as you progress through the ranks, the game becomes incredibly fast and difficult.

But the game is more than just knowing the moves; other factors come into play such as momentum, positioning and timing -- this is where the game truly shines. Sure, anyone can hit a button and hit the ball back and forth, but a truly skilled player will get a sense of the table, know exactly where an opponent is going to be and then at the right time, execute a slam he won't be able to return. Facing another player with equal skill is truly an exercise in stamina. You would think an 11-point game goes quickly. Think again. We have had games that have lasted more than an hour, sometimes two. Some games have lasted more than 100 hits per point.

Visually, the game is top-notch. From incredibly detailed player models to cool lighting effects, "Table Tennis" shows off what the Xbox 360 can do. The game is also filled with a lot of graphic details -- from the lifelike motion of clothes to the sweat glistening on players' arms to foreheads glistening in the lights. It's impressive.

If you get bored playing against the computer-controlled players, you can venture online via Xbox Live and play against the real thing.
