Man Dies After Swerving Into Tree in Great Falls Area

A man driving a truck on Georgetown Pike in the Great Falls area was killed yesterday morning after he swerved off the road and smashed into a tree, Fairfax County police said.

The man's name was not released because his family had not been notified. Police said the man, driving a Chevrolet C550 truck with a dump-truck bed attached, was headed west on Georgetown Pike about 7:10 a.m. Investigators said he may have been speeding. As the truck approached Welham Green Road, it swerved into the eastbound lane, then back across the westbound lane and into a tree.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police do not know why the truck swerved, and the investigation is continuing.

Ice Cream Vendor Is Beaten and Robbed in Reston

An ice cream vendor, making his rounds in a truck in Reston, was beaten and robbed at knifepoint Friday night, Fairfax County police said yesterday.

The victim, a 58-year-old Vienna man, had parked his truck in the 12200 block of Laurel Glade Court, just off Glade Drive in the Hunters Woods section of Reston. About 9:15 p.m., a teenager with a dark bandanna over his face wielded a knife and demanded the man's money, police said. A second teenager wearing a bandanna climbed inside the truck through the driver's door and began beating the man, police said.

The assailants took the man's money and cellphone, police said, then fled into the woods. The victim chased them, but they escaped. He was not seriously hurt. The man told police he thought his attackers were about 15 years old, about 5 feet 5 inches tall and wearing dark clothes and baseball caps.

Man Charged in Rape Was Arrested at Site of Abduction

An Alexandria man who was returning a rape victim to the spot where he had abducted her was arrested early Friday when police arrived at the same time, Fairfax County police said yesterday.

The episode began and ended along the 7800 block of Heritage Drive in Annandale. An Annandale woman, 19, told police her car had been struck from behind by another vehicle about 2:30 a.m. She and the other driver got out of their cars, and the woman said the other driver grabbed her at knifepoint, forced her into his trunk, drove her to a secluded area and raped her, according to police.

A passerby called police, as did a friend of the victim's who had been speaking with her on the phone. Officers pulled up to investigate just as the assailant and the woman were returning to her car, police spokeswoman Mary Mulrenan said.

Charles E. McDonald, 24, of the 5000 block of Seminary Road was charged with rape, abduction with intent to defile and two counts of sodomy.
