Bo's Beau Gets VIP Treatment

Such a dog day afternoon at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. for actor-turned-musician John Corbett and his band. White House Chief of Staff J osh Bolten arranged for a private tour Thursday before Corbett took the stage at the Birchmere that night.

Corbett, 45, yapped on about his experience to the sold-out crowd of 500 (95 percent of whom were women, natch). Fans heard all about his peek inside the Oval Office and playtime with first pooch Barney inside and outside. (Ooh! Was Miss Beazley jealous?!) Several members of Bolten's crew turned out for the show and were spotted gettin' down to the band's country-western stylings.

Bolten, who is traveling with the president, is acquainted with Corbett's live-in love, avid Republican Bo Derek (the two met during the 2000 presidential campaign).

The "Sex and the City" actor was later spotted at the Georgetown pub Nathan's with a few women and tattooed, rocker-type men in tow. Corbett wore a flame-patterned black shirt and sipped beer, vodka and cranberry juice.

Eager female bar patrons looking to get up close and personal were politely rebuffed by the star with a simple, "I'm not touching you, so please don't touch me." How very Aidan Shaw of him.

Pinned and Engaged in One Day

It was pomp and romance at yesterday's D.C. police academy graduation ceremony when Duncan Bedlion's name was called.

The new grad got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend, 24-year-old Danielle Houser , after receiving his officer pin from her (loved ones traditionally present the pin). Cheers went up from the crowd. "The attention at the ceremony is about me, and I want to bring it back to her," he told us before the big moment. "This is about us." Aww.

"I was totally caught off guard. . . . The room spun just a little," said Houser, a third-grade teacher at Flower Hill Elementary School in Gaithersburg. "I wondered why he looked stark-white across the stage."

The newly engaged couple met through dating Web site four months ago and "things got moving real fast," Bedlion said.

Bedlion, 24, has been assigned to the 6th District. A December wedding is in the works.

Oprah Clears the Air

Oprah and her best gal-pal, Gayle King , have a message for the world: They're not gay. "I understand why people think we're gay," Oprah says in the August issue of O, the Oprah Magazine. "There isn't a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women. So I get why people have to label it -- how can you be this close without it being sexual?" Adds King, "The truth is, if we were gay, we would tell you, because there's nothing wrong with being gay." All right, then!

End Notes

· The Hank Greenberg stamp will make its official debut today (alongside stamps honoring Mickey Mantle , Roy Campanella and Mel Ott ) at Yankee Stadium with "The Lives and Times of Hank Greenberg" director Aviva Kempner looking on from the stands with Greenberg's family. "I'm thrilled," the locally based Peabody Award winner told us. Kempner spent 13 years working on the documentary about the Jewish baseball slugger. Up next? A documentary about radio and TV star Gertrude Berg , the mother of the sitcom.

· And all that . . . Usher. The R&B crooner is heading for Broadway in the role of lawyer Billy Flynn in the revival of "Chicago" starting Aug. 22, the musical's producers announced yesterday. His last scheduled appearance will be Oct. 1.
