Colbert I. King was spot on in his July 22 op-ed, "Bush and the NAACP: Too Much Left Unsaid."

With his address at the NAACP convention, President Bush was, probably unconsciously, guilty of perpetrating what he himself has called "the soft bigotry of low expectations." By largely "talking to its members about what he thought they would like to hear," as Mr. King aptly put it, Mr. Bush effectively segregated NAACP issues and concerns from those that affect the larger populace. And by not addressing other, broader concerns (the transfer of wealth, budget deficits, war in Iraq, etc.), Mr. Bush only managed to further alienate his audience by ignoring their higher expectations.

The president's first appearance as president at the NAACP convention established that Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream is still far from being realized.
