Loads of Bliss Outings
There are so many day spas in the Crystal City and Pentagon City area, you can almost hear the "ahhs" as you stroll through Pentagon Row and the adjacent Fashion Centre at Pentagon City.
Massage, facial and foot-and-hand pampering specialists at Pentagon Row range from a plush Elizabeth Arden Red Door spa (1101 S. Joyce St., Ste B-36; 703-373-5888) with hers or his services like reflexology foot treatments and cream-and-sugar body scrub, to a Jouvence Aveda salon (101 South Joyce St., B10; 703-413-4100) where sweet-smelling oils, lotions and potions star in escapes like aromatic pedicures and hot stone massage.
At the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, spa junkies can relax à deux at the Modern Day Spa (703-418-4440; modernco.net), which boasts one of the area's only two-person massage rooms for couples rubdowns. The decor: soothing blues, greens and taupes.
At the Fashion Centre's popular Salon Cielo & Spa (703-415-0406; saloncielo.com), serene soundtracks play in warmly decorated rooms where aestheticians perform back-smoothing "facials" and Swedish massages. Also available: haircuts, pedicures and other interesting treatments.
A Reveal MedSpa, with its let's-stay-young line of treatments from Botox to peels, is scheduled to open in the area in early August.
Modern Day Spa regional director Debbe Evans, who is also a certified massage therapist, senses why there might be a disproportionately large number of spas in the neighborhood.
"Having been a former Crystal City employee, I know there's a lot of stress in this area. There are many powerful people -- between military and civil service members and high-stress private-sector individuals," she said. "A day spa provides a welcome retreat from the stresses of the nation's capital."
