The Aug. 3 editorial "Plan A: Approve Plan B" merely perpetuates the politicization of the Food and Drug Administration. The reality is that the FDA is being held hostage by both parties in the dispute over the emergency contraceptive. The use of the agency as a political pawn further sacrifices science and ultimately affects patients' access to potentially lifesaving therapies.
Andrew C. von Eschenbach, the nominee to head the FDA, made his commitment to science clear and reiterated that the balance between protecting and promoting public health is the principle that will guide all decisions at the FDA. He cannot lead the agency to its greatest effectiveness without permanent confirmation. It is true; the public deserves access to Plan B, but not at the greater expense of patient care. Please, recognize what is at risk without permanent leadership and make patients "Plan A."
