Photo Contest Winners 2006

We asked you to hit us with your best shots, and for our seventh annual photo contest, you responded with . . . a smiling fish?

Oh, we're not kidding anyone: We couldn't help but smile back at our third-place winner.

Actually, there was a lot to be happy about. Our judges -- Joe Elbert, The Post's assistant managing editor for photography, and four other photo department staffers -- agreed that this year's batch of finalists was first-rate. We have to concur.

Don't get us wrong. We received plenty of shots of families frolicking at the beach and dogs lounging in the sun and flowers waving in the breeze. But dozens of standouts -- including our first-place honoree, the evocative shot above of children playing in Brazil -- made the judging of this year's competition particularly difficult.

Thanks to all who contributed. And keep that camera handy for our 2007 contest.
