Former George Mason standout Jai Lewis has signed a professional basketball contract and will play for Bosna of the Adriatic Basketball Association. He will be playing in the league's top division and as a forward on the league's most dominant team. Bosna is based in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The season starts on Sept. 30.

· TENNIS: In Montreal, Martina Hingis held off Svetlana Kuznetsova for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win in the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup.

Hingis advanced to today's semifinals against Anna Chakvetadze , a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 winner over Shahar Peer .

Dinara Safina and Ana Ivanovic will meet in the other semifinal. Safina defeated Nicole Pratt , 6-1, 6-0, shortly after finding out that her brother, men's star Marat Safin , had been injured in a car accident on Thursday in Cincinnati.

Safin has a suspected mild concussion and a stiff neck after his car was struck by another vehicle, but called his sister after her match to assure her he was fine.

· LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES: In South Williamsport, Pa., Lake Charles of Louisiana defeated Columbia, Mo., 1-0, on Gabe Von Rosenberg 's sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth.

Louisiana pitchers allowed just one hit. In other games, Portsmouth, N.H., defeated Murrayhill of Beaverton, Ore., 6-1; and Arabian American of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia shut out Surrey, British Columbia, 5-0.

· BOXING: In Dallas, Evander Holyfield began his latest comeback with an easy triumph over Jeremy Bates . Holyfield, 43, rocked Bates into the ropes late in the first round, withstood a few hard body shots early in the second then caught his insurance-salesman foe in the corner to earn a technical knockout with 4 seconds left in the round, capturing his first victory since June 2002.
