· SOCCER: In Moscow, the United States beat Congo, 2-1, in its opener at the FIFA Under-20 Women's World Championship on goals by Kelley O'Hara and Amy Rodriguez .
· HIGH SCHOOLS: Joey Roberson , the Stafford High lineman who died Aug. 11 from heatstroke, was buried yesterday at Sunset Memorial Park in Fredericksburg.
At a preceding service in the Stafford High auditorium, friends and family were joined by Roberson's former teammates, who wore their blue football jerseys while they remembered the 6-foot-2, 280-pound Roberson, who went by the nickname "Big Joe."
A Stafford County schools spokesperson said the county is conducting an internal review of the practice during which Roberson collapsed. Interim superintendent Andre Nougaret hopes to share the findings with the county school board on Tuesday.
· COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Guard Jeff Jones , a highly rated high school senior basketball player from Drexel Hill, Pa., has orally committed to play at Virginia, according to Scout.com. Jones had reneged on a commitment to Maryland.
· GYMNASTICS: Sasha Artemev capped his rapid comeback by winning the Visa Gymnastics title in St. Paul, Minn. Still rehabilitating from an extensive shoulder injury 18 months ago, the 20-year-old went 6 for 6 in the finals to win easily, with 180.85 points to 179.3 for runner-up Jonathan Horton .
