Orioles Face Interesting Decision

BALTIMORE, Aug. 22 -- The Baltimore Orioles could have an interesting situation when rosters expand on Sept. 1. With the likelihood that the Orioles will call up starter Hayden Penn, Manager Sam Perlozzo didn't dismiss the possibility the team could use a six-man rotation in September. Perlozzo said there wouldn't be much of a disruption to the rotation since most starters have had extra rest because of a rash of days off recently.

"I guess you could," Perlozzo said. "Basically you're on that now. I think that could be a possibility."

Perlozzo said there hadn't been much talk of using Penn as a reliever. On Monday, Penn threw a season-high 124 pitches in 5 2/3 innings.

"That's good that he's been able to throw that many pitches," Perlozzo said. "I think we get overly concerned about pitch counts. I think if you look back, pitch counts were always 120 to 125."

Orioles pitching coach Leo Mazzone said he hadn't discussed a six-man rotation with Perlozzo.

"If we're doing that, I don't know," Mazzone said.

Glad Tidings for Glavine

Mazzone said he would soon call New York Mets pitcher Tom Glavine, who received a bit of good news on Tuesday. Glavine won't have to have season-ending surgery to relieve numbness in his throwing hand. Mazzone was Glavine's longtime pitching coach with the Atlanta Braves.

"I remember in the 12 years every once in awhile he had to put his hand in a hot water bottle," Mazzone said. "I'm just glad it's not anything that will cause him to miss too much time."
