Dear Dr. Gridlock:

I have not driven to Ocean City during the summer in about 10 years. However, we will be going there Saturday. What's the traffic like these days heading toward the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and ultimately Ocean City? How early will we need to leave?

My first recommendation for reaching the beach is to sign up, if you haven't already, for an E-ZPass account ( http://www.ezpassmd.com ). An E-ZPass transponder attached to your car allows you to use the Chesapeake Bay Bridge's toll plaza express lanes and avoid stopping to pay at a booth. That helps, unless the toll plaza traffic is backed up so far that you can't get to the E-ZPass express lanes. For up-to-date information about bridge traffic, motorists can call 877-BAYSPAN (229-7726). There's also plenty of traffic information on Maryland's Coordinated Highways Action Response Team (CHART) Web site, http://www.chart.state.md.us . You also can check the traffic cameras before you go at http://www.trafficland.com . That site includes a view of the bridge toll plaza.
