Today

FILM Get "Hitched" on the Green It seems every town's got its own outdoor film festival, and today, Silver Spring adds its name to the list. Don't get us wrong, we like the communal, party vibe of gathering outside on blankets with picnics and, shh, a bottle or two. Tonight is "Hitch," the Will Smith-Eva Mendes comedy about a dating coach of sorts who is discovered by a gossip columnist. Free. Scope a seat at 6 p.m., movie at 8. Veterans Field, Fenton Street and Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring.

Tomorrow

FESTIVALS Olivia All Grown Up Raven Symone, that cute-as-pie Cosby kid, sure grew up into one multi-platform powerhouse -- and apparently, one of those platforms is the local fairground. She opens the 11-day Maryland State Fair with a music performance tomorrow, kicking off a whirlwind of bull-riding, country music and other events. 7:30 p.m. $6; free for children younger than 12. The fair runs 10 a.m.-10 p.m. through Sept. 4. Maryland State Fairgrounds, 2200 York Rd., Timonium. 410-252-0200 ext. 227 or http://www.marylandstatefair.com .

Saturday

LITERATURE Pelecanos's Picture of D.C. George Pelecanos, an author and D.C. native who has made a career mining the area for its criminal underside, is all over town promoting his new book, "The Night Gardener," about three cops reunited, in a sense, by a dead teenager who turns up in a community garden. On Saturday, Pelecanos will work his noir magic in Silver Spring at Borders Books and Music. 7 p.m. 8518 Fenton St., Silver Spring. 301-585-0550.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS Ladies, Get On Your Running Shoes The Prince George's Running Club hosts the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun 5K race, an all-ladies dash around Lake Artemesia. It's followed by a fun run for kids, all benefiting Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the National Capital Area. $25; $24 club members; $40 for two runners. Registration at 7 a.m.; race at 8. 94th Aero Squadron restaurant, 5240 Paint Branch Pkwy., College Park. 301-927-1924 or http://www.pgrc.org .
