When the Bulldogs Have the Ball

Bowie State is predicted to repeat as CIAA East Division champion for two main reasons: its defense and running back Isaac Redman. Redman led the CIAA with 1,512 rushing yards last season and will run behind the same starting linemen, who include two preseason all-conference guards in Torrain Kelly and Robert Blocker. When Redman needs a breather, Nathaniel Queen (103 carries, 444 yards last season) is more than capable.

Quarterback Lamar Manigo also is back after completing 82 of 198 passes for 1,385 yards and 17 touchdowns with 12 interceptions last season. He'll be throwing to some new targets -- no Bulldog caught more than nine passes last season. Rashad Henry likely will get a starting job, and expect newcomer Brandon McDonald also to be a factor at wide receiver. Tight end Demarcus Reeves also will start for a second straight season.

Bowie State's mission will be to keep the clock rolling and hold on to the ball. If that happens, the Bulldogs should show that last season, the school's best in 17 years, was no aberration.

When Opponents Have the Ball

In a league that features three of the top quarterbacks in Division II, the Bulldogs will have their hands full, but they were equal to the task last season. Six starters, including the three leading tacklers, are back from a unit that ranked second in Division II in total defense (220.7 yards per game) and third in rushing defense (76.7 yards per game).

Strong safety Terrance Stafford led the team with 95 tackles last season and has a nose for the ball, whether forcing fumbles or intercepting passes. Free safety Darvin Dinkins joins Stafford in the preseason all-conference defensive backfield.

Defensive end Devin Williams, second on the team with 57 tackles last season, is another preseason all-conference selection, as is linebacker Durrell York, who had 3 1/2 sacks among his eight tackles for losses.
