Airport Update

Sunday, September 3, 2006; Page P02

Washington Dulles International introduced six venues for pre-flight snacks this summer, ranging from a full-service restaurant in Concourse D to a made-to-order sandwich and milkshake place in Concourse B. They'll be joined by 12 others by the end of 2007. The airport will also host the Dulles Day Family Festival on Oct. 7, with a classic car show, rides and the 14th annual Plane Pull, where teams compete in dragging a 145,000-pound aircraft ( http://www.planepull.com/ ) . . . Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall opened several new concessions recently, including a Borders bookstore in the main terminal and a Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company cafe on Concourse D . . . Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi is on schedule to open for international flights Sept. 28, replacing the current Bangkok International as the area's primary airport for commercial airline flights; it will reportedly surpass Hong Kong International as the world's largest terminal building . . . Johannesburg International will be renamed for the late Oliver Tambo, who headed the African National Congress during the height of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement. This summer the airport was the continent's first to host an airline (South African Airways) offering free baggage shrink wrap service to prevent tampering. Those on other airlines can use a pay facility offering the same service.
