An occasional look at products the travel industry insists we need.

WHAT: Compact fishing pole

AIMED AT: Travelers who want to catch the fish of the day no matter where they are.

HOW MUCH: $17.95 to $19.95 for rod and reel.

BUT DOES IT WORK? Some people see a body of water and think: swimming. Others look at it and say: lunch. For the fisherperson who feels the tug of the line while traveling, there's the Ultralight Pen Fishing Rod and Reel. When not in use, the two-ounce rod collapses into a giant magic marker-shape holder that can be stashed in a car, backpack or tote. With a flick of the wrist, the rod extends to 36 inches and is sturdy enough to hook a two-pounder. To attach the reel, place it between two silver rings and screw tightly. (Hooks and line not included.) The post-fishing process, however, is not as smooth. Theoretically, you slightly turn each rod segment and watch it fall like an accordion. Only on the third try did we figure out how to fold it up.
