· COURTS: The federal government has sued former NFL quarterback Ken Stabler , seeking more than $500,000 in overdue taxes and proposing foreclosure on property he owns in Mobile and Baldwin counties in Alabama.

The suit, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court by the Justice Department's Tax Division, says Stabler owes $241,565 in unpaid income taxes, penalties and interest from 1999, 2000 and 2001.

It also says the Stabler Co., which he owns, owes $303,282 in unpaid income and employment taxes, penalties and interest from 1995, 1998, 1999 and 2000. The Stabler Co. arranges speaking engagements.

Stabler is scheduled to be a radio announcer for Alabama's football season opener today against Hawaii. . . .

Defense attorneys want a public opinion poll to determine whether an impartial jury can be seated for Maurice Clarett 's robbery trial later this month in Columbus, Ohio.

The intense publicity surrounding the case and Clarett's recent arrest following a police chase make it impossible for the former Ohio State star to receive a fair trial in Franklin County, his attorneys claim. In a motion requesting the poll, they asked the court for funds to pay for it.

Prosecutors oppose the motion, calling it inadmissible and against court procedure.

The county shouldn't have to pay for polling because Clarett has not proven to the court that he cannot pay for his own defense, prosecutor Ron O'Brien said Thursday.

Clarett is awaiting a Sept. 18 trial on charges that he robbed two people of a cellphone outside a bar early on New Year's Day. He was arrested Aug. 9 after a police chase and charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

· COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Kojo Mensah , a high-scoring guard whose departure from Siena turned acrimonious when the school wouldn't release him from his scholarship, enrolled at Duquesne. Mensah is paying his own way for the 2006-07 school year and will not be part of the basketball team. He can play during the 2007-08 season and would have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

· HORSE RACING: Lost in the Fog , the champion sprinter diagnosed with cancer this summer, might undergo chemotherapy next week in an attempt to prolong his life. Encouraged by the 2005 Eclipse Award winner's cheerful disposition and stable health after last month's discovery, trainer Greg Gilchrist said doctors from the University of California-Davis veterinary school recommended a series of six treatments that could send the cancer into remission.
