When we last left the New York Giants, they were reeling from one of the poorest playoff performances in recent memory. They barely showed up against the Carolina Panthers, losing 23-0 at home in the first round.
"It never has left my thoughts from the evening after the game, and it's not going to change, and I don't want it to," said Giants Coach Tom Coughlin, who revisited that debacle with his team time and again during training camp and the preseason. "I want to pour a little salt into the wound."
With that failure as motivation, the Giants are talking Super Bowl, which is not surprising considering their surplus of talent.
Running back Tiki Barber is coming off a career season. Tight end Jeremy Shockey is among the best at his position. Wide receiver Plaxico Burress revived his career in his first season with the team. The defense welcomes linebacker LaVar Arrington, who has been to three Pro Bowls.
The development of quarterback Eli Manning is the question mark. During the first half of last season, Manning showed poise and wise decision making. Down the stretch, he made questionable choices and played especially badly in the loss to the Panthers.
"I feel good right now. I feel comfortable with the offense," Manning told reporters at the start of training camp. "You know the offense. You know kind of how it all works, what you're supposed to be doing and what things you need to improve on. I feel good. I know kind of what my goals are and know what I need to get better on."
