It would be hard to create a more uninspiring team on paper, Willis McGahee aside. The Bills have the same two middling (that's putting it nicely) quarterbacks in J.P. Losman and Kelly Holcomb. Losman was named the starter late in the preseason, but by no means is the job his for good. Holcomb played well in spots last season after Losman was benched.

And yet the Bills drafted a safety (Donte Whitner) in the first round when Matt Leinart was available. As their coach, they hired retread Dick Jauron, who was good enough to be the interim head coach of the Detroit Lions last season and has a career NFL record of 36-49. They lost wide receiver Eric Moulds, their best playmaker for many years, and replaced him with, well, no one, really, unless you count Peerless Price, who gained 96 yards receiving last season for Dallas and now is a first-string wideout. Yikes.

About the only good news that came out of Orchard Park, N.Y., in the preseason was the return of Pro Bowl linebacker Takeo Spikes, who is coming off surgery to repair a torn Achilles' tendon. Spikes and the defense better be well conditioned because they figure to be on the field quite a bit this season.

The most interesting development of the Bills' offseason was hiring an 81-year-old man as their general manager, and that's probably not a good sign. However, because that octogenarian happens to be Marv Levy, who coached Buffalo to four Super Bowls, Bills fans can't wait until kickoff. Sadly for them, he'll be in the owner's box, and Jim Kelly will be out of sight.
