Were it not for San Diego breaking in a new quarterback, it could well have been favored to win the division. That doesn't mean it can't compete with Philip Rivers.

A first-round choice in 2004, Rivers's career has consisted of 30 pass attempts and zero starts. But he has appeared mature and poised during the preseason, and his teammates have been effusive in their praise. Rivers has plenty of talent around him, most notably running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who had 1,462 rushing yards and accounted for 23 touchdowns last season (18 rushing, 2 receiving, 3 passing).

Tight end Antonio Gates, with his 1,101 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns last season, is the best at his position. Keenan McCardell provides stability as No. 1 wide receiver, and the hope is Eric Parker emerges as a reliable No. 2.

On defense, inside linebacker Donnie Edwards is as steady as they come, but he's probably playing his last season in San Diego because the team has been trying to trade him since April. Linebacker Shawne Merriman was the defensive rookie of the year last season, and there's a reason why he has earned the nickname "Lights Out." Merriman can be the disruptive force at linebacker the Chargers have not had since Junior Seau was in his prime.

The linebacking corps was dealt a blow when Steve Foley was shot three times by an off-duty police officer in suburban San Diego early Sunday morning. His injuries are not life threatening, but he will miss the season.
