Wizards to Make Regular Camping Trip to VCU

Wednesday, September 6, 2006

The Washington Wizards announced yesterday they will hold training camp on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond for the third straight year.

The camp will open on Oct. 3 and run through Oct. 8. The team will hold a scrimmage at VCU's Siegel Center on Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. The scrimmage is free and open to the public; all other camp practices will be closed. The Wizards will open an eight-game preseason schedule on Oct. 9 against the Toronto Raptors at Verizon Center and start the regular season on Nov. 1 at Cleveland. The home opener is Nov. 4 against the Boston Celtics.

The Wizards have 14 players under contract and are expected to fill out the training camp roster soon. The team confirmed that former George Washington forward Mike Hall has been invited to camp.

The Wizards have yet to sign first-round pick Oleksiy Pecherov and still are deciding where they want the 7-foot forward to play this season. Pecherov, who played in Paris last season, remains under contract to BC Kyiv of the Ukrainian Superleague and must sign with the Wizards before the team can bring him to camp. The Wizards can pay up to $500,000 of Pecherov's $800,000 buyout with BC Kyiv.
